Overall Function
The Laboratory Team:
1. Provides basic diagnostic services to help healthcare providers medically manage acute and chronic conditions
2. Reports to clinical care personnel findings or trends that may impact the care provided
3. Provides results to ordering healthcare providers, maintains records, and conveys indicated lab results to public health authorities having jurisdiction
4. Maintains and operates the necessary lab equipment, including performing quality control measures consistent with clinical laboratory guidelines
5. Manages the appropriate storage and disposal of collected biological specimens
Composition and Ordering Specifications
1. Discuss logistics for deploying this team, such as working conditions, length of deployment, security, lodging, transportation, and meals, prior to deployment
2. Discuss environment and personal protective measures that may be necessary to protect staff and patients
3. Specify the need to order additional staff to ensure the availability of resources required to safely and effectively support the mission assignment, including administrative, logistics, communications, supply, and clerical personnel
4. Requestor supplements clinical staff with Healthcare Resource Coordination Team if equipment, supplies, information technology, and communications support are necessary
5. When ordering staff, consider patient census, patient acuity, and the types of diagnostic lab work necessary
6. Requestor identifies, verifies, and mitigates potentially hazardous conditions
7. To ensure staff is qualified to care for the patient mix, requests for assistance specify the clinical area, specialty services (if necessary), mission assignment, and anticipated length of deployment
8. Address potential biohazard management issues as appropriate
