Type Description
Type 1The primary purpose of an advanced practice registered nurse is to function as a health care professional licensed to diagnose and treat a range of health problems, working either independently or in collaboration with a physician or other licensed independent practitioner. APRNs specialize and most become certified in such areas as anesthesia, emergency care, pediatrics, geriatrics, family, obstetrics, psychiatry and acute care.

EducationSome APRNs have been grandfathered into the profession. Even if not master's degree prepared or certified by national certifying organization, they still retain the authority to practice as an APRN. Under these circumstances, an exception may be considered to the criteria.
